JOHN 17:13 "THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE MY JOY 21" 20120115WED

INTRO; LISTEN! LEARN! CHRIST WOULD HAVE US A 

     CONQUEROR & HAPPY

     A. OUR LORD HAD DONE & SAID ALL FOR OUR

          COMFORT & SALVATION

          1. He wants us to be a happy people = singing, secure

     B. "THESE THINGS" = THINGS ALREADY SPOKEN IN

          THEIR HEARING.

          1. He had unfolded secrets hidden in eternity

                a. Revealed purposes, thoughts of God

          2. He had been uttering them to God in prayer.

                a. But also so they might hear, be content

                b. "They were thine" "thou gavest them me"

                c. "I have given them Thy Word" = "they belived"

     C. "THESE THINGS" GOD'S EXPRESSION OF LOVE TO

          US

          1. Was no whisper of condemnation for failure, imperfection

          2. He wants us filled with "Joy unspeakable and full of glory"

     D. "THESE THINGS I SPEAK IN THE WORLD" = IT

          LIETH IN WICKEDNESS

          1. The scene of our temptations , conflicts, sorrows.

                a. When He is about to leave them

          2. He has conquered the world and all our enemies

          3. So He now desires joy for us and them

     E. THE DISCIPLES AND OURSELVES WERE JOYLESS:

          POOR, WEAK

          1. Sin had marred, sorrow had dimmed, fear of death

          2. He wants us to have Joy = What joy?

     F. HIS JOY = HEAVENLY JOY = NOTHING ON EARTH

          CAN COMPARE

          1. "My joy fulfilled" = complete, satisfying.

          2. "In themselves" = not in another = but his people

          3. Ro 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and

                peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the

                power of the Holy Ghost.

     G. WE MAY VIEW HIS WORDS IN THREE POINTS OF

          VIEW

I."MY JOY' = THE JOY WHICH WAS HIS TO GIVE = HE IS 

     AUTHOR

     A. HE CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN TO GIVE US HIS

          JOY.

          1. Isa 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give

                unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the

                garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might

                be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD,

                that he might be glorified.

          2. Lu 2:10-11 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for,

                behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be

                to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of

               David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

     B. "MY JOY" = JOY REALIZED IN SOUL THRU

          KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

          1. Love that the Son came to reveal to us

                a. The salvation He came to bestow

                b. The relationships He came to sustain.

                c. the Comforter, He sent to dwell with us.

          2. Joy resulting from the assurance of our acceptance

                a. The consciousness of our justification.                             

                b. The realization of our adoption into Family

          3. 1Jo 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not

                yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall

                appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

     C. ABIDING JOY AND PEACE AND REST

          1. Rest from all our fears, foes, trials

          2. He calls this "my joy" because He purchased it for us.

II. "MY JOY" = JOY OF WHICH HE IS THE OBJECT,

     SUBJECT

     A. DISTINGUISHED FROM ALL OTHER SOURCES OF

          JOY

          1. We are too apt to look for joy in ourselves.

          2. We examine our accomplishments, successes

          3. We look at graces that God gave for Christ sake

          4. Real joy only comes form enjoyment of Christ Himself

                a. He must be the foundation of al heavenly joy

          5. Joh 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy

                might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.           

     B. REMEMBER THE "CHARACTER" OF HIS JOY

          1. It is full, complete, abiding, unchanging

                a. Because He is the cause of it.

          2. 1Pe 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though

                now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy

                unspeakable and full of glory:

                a. Joy unspeakable not mean we can't tell it

                     (1) Means impossible to describe for wonder.

                     (2) Like song "The Love of God"

                b. "Full of glory" = begins on earth.

                     (1) Complete in Heaven

     C. "MY JOY" = MEANING HIS OWN JOY.

          1. When our Lord speaks of "peace" = it is "My peace I give

               unto you"

                a. "My rest" "My Strength", "My grace"

                b. "I am the life", "I am the way"

          2. He says 'My joy" = what was His joy? = God himself

                a. Psa. 43 says of God "My God, my exceeding joy"

                b. The only begotten Son, beloved of the Father

          3. The doing of the Father's will was His joy

                a. The fulfilling Father's salvation for us = JOY

                b. The Mediator between God & man = Was His joy.

                c. "All power of heaven & earth" for us = His joy.

III. THERE ARE THREE OCCASIONS OF JOY, CHRIST 

     SHARES WITH HIS PEOPLE

     A. Isa 62:5 as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy

          God rejoice over thee.

     B. THE JOY OF HARVEST

          1.  Isa 9:3 They joy before thee according to the joy in harvest,
     C. THE JOY OF THOSE WHO DIVIDE THE SPOIL.

          1. Isa. 9:3b and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

          2. If we could only hurry that day

                a. When Lord Jesus gathers His people to Himself

                b. Day when we partake of His joy as conquerors

                     (1) Over death, Hell, the Tomb, World, Satan.

                c. The day of opening paradise to His Blood bought people

                d. Joy of presenting us to Himself

          3. The joy of keeping us till He can present us Jude 1:24 

                faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

IV. SO HE TELLS US "THESE THINGS I SPEAK IN THE

     WORLD, THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE MY JOY 

     FULFILLED IN THEMSELVES"

     A. Joh 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy

          might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

          1. Mt 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and

                faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I

                will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy

                of thy lord.

     B. IF WE WANT TO EXPERIENCE THIS JOY WE ARE

          TOLD "REJOICE ALWAYS"

          1. It is God's will in our lives.

                a. "Rejoicing always"

                b. "Rejoicing in the hop of the glory of God"

     C. OUR JOY IS NOT FOUND IN OUR LOVE BU TIN HIS

          LOVE.

          1. Our love is always tainted with depravity selfishness

                a. It can never be according to our love or faith

          2. We joy because of our faith in His Word

                a. 1Jo 4:16And we have known and believed the love

                     that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth

                     in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

                b. 1Jo 1:3-4That which we have seen and heard declare

                     we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us:

                     and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with

                     his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto

                    you, that your joy may be full.

                     (1) It was joy of Lord to be "link" between His Father

                          & His people

CONCLUSION: THE BIBLE TELLS US WE ARE TO BE A 

     REJOICING PEOPLE

     A. NOT THE FAKE JOY OF THE WORLD, OR FALSE

          RELIGIONS

          1. But the true joy that comes from being the Father's children.

                a. Joy in our Lord = He is wonderful

     B. WE MUST HUMBLE OURSELVES BEFORE THE ONE

          THAT CAME FROM HEAVEN TO BE OUR JOY

          1. He went back because He "IS" our Joy

          2. He sent the Holy Ghost so we might "joy in the Word"

     C. OUR JOY COMES FROM LYING IN THE "GREEN

          PASTURES"

          1. Resting beside the 'STILL WATERS"

     D. THE WORLD CAN'T GIVE THIS JOY, OR PEACE

          1. It also can not take it from us

          2. Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our

                faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the

                cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand

                of the throne of God.
